Resume Format

The resume format that you choose should be based on your career profile, work experience, skills, and educational qualification. Prepare a list of things that need to be included in your resume, and then compile the details to format your resume into a personalized resume.

A format of your resume should be simple and professional. You should not show your creativity unless you come from a creative field. The format should appeal the eyes and easily readable. It should draw the attention of the reader. The resume format should be precise yet give complete information of the candidate. There are two types of resume format. They are the chronological resume and functional resume

  • Chronological Resume: The chronological resume is one of the standard formats of resume. If you are an entry level job seeker then you need to draft a chronological resume. The entire work history can easily be showcased on this type of resume. This type of resume is important in emphasizing the consistency in career and job responsibilities carried out. The chronological resume is written in reverse order. The resume starts with the candidate’s current or previous job. The resume moves backward in time.

  • Functional Resume: Functional resume discusses the candidate’s skills and abilities in detail. If you need to focus on skills rather than time, you should go for the functional resume. For beginners, functional resume is a resume that emphasizes on skills than the career history. This type of resume can be used when there are gaps in your career due to various reasons. A good functional resume suits a person who wants to change his/her career path. He /she want to give importance to the skills, which were not used in his /her recent job.

A candidate has to decide whether he needs to go for functional or chronological resume format. It depends on his requirements.

Experience: This part of your resume will deal with the work experience you have till date. You need to provide information about the companies you worked with, the designation, period and the job profile.

References: You need not include references in the resume. Prepare a list of references and submit if the employer asks you.
